I was going to make this a facebook post, but as I was thinking about what I wanted to say, I realized it was WAYYYY longer that would be appropriate for a status update.
So a couple of people have brought up religion to me lately, and I've been seeing a lot of these type of posts on facebook lately. First of all, I think this is probably something that's common to all religions but MOST of my friends are either Christian or Pagan so that's where I see it the most. Since I don't want the Christians to think I'm picking on them I'll start with the Pagans.
For those that don't know, Pagan is an umbrella term. I do believe I went over this in an older post so I won't go into detail, but Paganism actually consist of many different religions in the same way Christianity consists of many different denominations. In Paganism I hear people say, so and so isn't a real witch because... they are Wiccan, they aren't Wiccan, they aren't Gardnerian Wiccan, they are neo pagan, they aren't family trad, they haven't had an initiation, they read Silver Ravenwolf, they don't read such and such author, they aren't in a coven, they don't follow the exact same tenets as I do, etc... Let me say right here that I view the different paths under Paganism as religions. Witchcraft is a practice. You can be a Pagan (or more specific path) and a witch. You can be Pagan but not a witch, and you can be a witch and not be Pagan. Witchcraft is the practice of magic. If you practice magic and cast spells, even ineffectual ones, you are a witch. Now yes some people claim to have Charmed or The Craft or Harry Potter type powers that, well I'd have to see to believe and even then I'd be skeptical, but that's not what I'm talking about. Also you have people wanting to define whether someone is a real Wiccan, or whatever path, or a real Pagan or not. With the specific paths, they do have basic core tenets that don't leave much wiggle room. I am not a Wiccan because I do not hold the belief that all gods are one god and all goddesses are one goddess to be true, and quite honestly that can be very confusing to me. Also I do not follow a strict interpretation of the Rede or believe in the Rule of Three. The general term of Paganism is much harder to define and I really think that's up to the individual whether they feel they are Pagan are not. Generally Abrahamic paths are not included, but the topic of Christian Witches (yes they exist, no I don't really understand it either) tends to be a bit of a gray area for some.
I'm going to move on to Christians now and then I'll wrap up. With Christians it's "So and so is not a Christian because... they are a different denomination, they don't speak in tongues, they dance and sing and shout during church, they don't dance and sing and shout during church, they don't pray allowed, they don't witness their faith, they aren't baptized they weren't baptized the way I was baptized, they believe in something that's not mentioned in the Bible and I have an opposing opinion, they use the wrong bible version, they drink, they don't take communion, they don't use wine for communion, they interpret this passage in the Bible wrong, again etc... you get the point yes?
Here I am addressing all faiths. Let me first state that I do understand that a few bad people can reflect negativity on a religion. This is especially true of a minority like Paganism where there is already so much misinformation there. Acts of terrorism are NEVER the acts of a religion. These are the acts of bad/sick people. That said, how does how someone else worship or practices affect your practice or your relationship with your God? Why does it matter exactly what they believe, especially if they are following the same BASIC tenets. If someone finds God in the song and dance, but you find him in the quiet reflective places, why is one of you right and one of you wrong? And, who made you the judge?

On being a weather witch
I often say magic is like any other skill. Most people can learn to plunk out chopsticks on piano, not everyone can play "Fur Elise" (for example). Most people can manage their way around a track, or kick a ball down a soccer field. Not everyone will compete in the olypmics or the world cup. Magic is the same. Most people can learn simple workings in any field, but some of us are born with inherent talents. Some are gifted healers, some are psychic or specialize in a certain field of divination. Some of us have a natural talent for weather control. I can stave off a storm for a short time by myself usually. For instance I was having one of my bad days and took off. When I was a fair distance from home I looked up and realize a nasty storm was brewing. Just exerting my will, I managed to stave it off until I reached a pavillion in the park. I mean the second i set foot in the pavillion and released my will, the heavens opened and it poured. Thunder and lightning flashed. I wondered if the other patrons of the park noticed the woman who brought the storm with her. I know this could be chalked up to coincidence, but it would sure be a hell of a one. I also believe in claiming responsibility for your magic. If I willed it not to rain, and it didn't rain, I'm going to take credit for that. If you don't have faith in your magic, how can you expect it to ever work? I have often been told it's going to rain when I have plans (neighborhood yardsale, going to fairy festival) With larger events like these I credit the magic not just to my will, but to others with talent willing it not to rain just as hard as I. The combine will is enough to change a weather pattern completely. Now this comes down to a matter of ethics. Is it wrong to shift weather patterns to suit selfish needs? Personally it's very rare I use my talent. I know that we need rain and snow, especially in this area, for the farms. Weather is a natural cycle which mainly should be left alone, and you never know what consequences moving a storm will have. Another area could get too much rain and flood. Some witches think weather magic is completely wrong and never should be used. Should weather witches combine and attempt to call rain in droughts? What purpose does a drought serve? That is something I haven't ever tried. I've never actually tried to call weather, only to hold it off. I don't have all the answers here. Just sharing some experiences and thoughts.

Moon Cycles...Blech (Men may want to skip this one)
I wasn't sure whether to post this on my normal blog or my pagan blog, but I decided to put it here.

My Great-Grandfather
This is not an original concept/story by any means, but I am rewriting it from my own point of view....
I want to tell you a story about my great-grandfather and why he is such a wonderful guy and why it is so important that you recognize how awesome he is.
When my grandmother was growing up my great-grandfather had only one rule, that she wasn't allowed to eat his favorite kind of candy. It sounds pretty simple, but you know, kids being kids... my grandmother decided it must be really good candy if she wasn't allowed to have any. One day she snuck into my great-grandfather's room, stole a piece, and ate it.
Now when my great-grandfather found out that my grandmother ate the candy he was really mad. My grandmother told him she was very sorry, but he beat her. He also made up a whole bunch of new rules. There are so many it's really hard to remember them all. Some of them were good, common sense rules that everyone has, like no hitting. Some of the rules seem silly and are almost imposible to keep, like no smiling during certain times. If you even THINK about breaking a rule, then you've broken it. So now my grandmother had a whole bunch of rules to keep track of. She isn't punished each time she breaks a rule, but my great-grandfather said he'd keep track of which rules she broke and punish her for them all at once, but she wouldn't know when. Not only did this apply to my grandmother but to her siblings and all their descendants. We all have to follow all these rules, and my great-grandfather keeps track of when we break them, and some day he'll punish us for all the rules we've broken.
Now I know that you think this seems harsh and how could I say my great-grandfather is so awesome? But i have to tell you the rest of the story. So the whole family was trying very hard not to break any rules and we were all very afraid of being punished. None of us were doing a very good job of following all the rules though. Some were doing better than others. So my great grandfather had a plan. When my aunt was a teenager he got her pregnant and she had my cousin. My cousin was VERY good and didn't break one single rule. So my great=grandfather decided to punish him for all of the rest of us breaking rules and it killed him.
Now I know that seems unfair, but my great-grandfather said since my cousin died that we don't have to be punished anymore. Some of the old rules we don't have to follow at all anymore, and some of them we're still supposed to follow, but if we break them it's ok. All we have to do is tell great-grandfather that we are sorry we broke the rules, how much we love him, how awesome he is, and thank you for killing my cousin, and then he won't punish us.
Of course if we don't love great-grandfather, and tell him how awesome he is, and thank him for killing my cousin then he will still punish us. Oh and since my cousin died, my great-grandfather decided everyone in the whole world should follow his rules. I'm sure you can see how loving and merciful he is. So I wanted to tell you that you should try and follow my great- grandfathers rules, and love him, and tell him how awesome he is. Don't forget to thank him for killing my cousin. Then great-grandfather won't punish you, and I really like you and I wouldn't want to see you get punished.
ETA: (I'm told my point wasn't clear) This is obviously a ridiculous story. If it were true you would be horrified. Why would you want anything to do with my great-grandfather and what right does he have to punish you?
Well substitute God for great-grandfather, Eve for grandma, Mary for aunt, and Jesus for cousin. Now you have the story of the biggest religion in the world and a follower trying to convert you. Seriously, it just doesn't make any sense... to me atleast. Why hold your deity to a lower standard than you hold your fellow man?

What is God?
I believe in one creating Source of the universe. I believe that all the gods and goddesses of all the pantheons all over the earth were created out of this source and are seperate entities. However I believe they were formed by man worshiping them, and came to exist out of the need of man. They exist to serve us, not the other way around. I also believe in lesser dieties, elementals. Spirits of the elements, dragons, fairies, gnomes. Not that you can actually see but much like the gods, they're invisible but you know they are there. I believe actually one of my guardian spirits to be a dragon.
